Default Spectra's rpms shoot up when idle and on freeway

When I turn on my 2005 Kia Spectra EX the rpms shoot up for a bit before warming up. Also while on the freeway once I hit 70 for a lil while, the rpms will drop and shoot back up and the car will jerk because of it. Recently the car has shut off on me twice while idle. My bf changed the alternator recently for other reasons and cleaned the idle air control valve as well. Any ideas as to what's wrong??
Thank you!
